The NI Department for Infrastructure have released the statement below about their ongoing ‘SHARE THE ROAD TO ZERO’ campaign.
SHARE THE ROAD TO ZERONORTHERN IRELAND ROAD SAFETY PLEDGE – WE ALL SHARE THE ROAD, SO SHOULDN’T WE ALL SHARE THE RESPONSIBILITY?
Share the Road to Zero is a huge road safety community programme with one aim – zero road deaths in Northern Ireland.
In 2012 the number of road deaths in Northern Ireland reached its lowest level since records began in 1931. However, every road death is one too many.
Over 95% of crashes where someone is killed or seriously injured are due to human error, so road deaths are preventable.
Too often, people take a risk and make the wrong choice; such as speeding, drink or drug driving, allowing ourselves to be distracted or not wearing a seatbelt.
We are ALL at risk every second of every day on our roads. That’s why 20,000 people across Northern Ireland have pledged to Share the Road to Zero. By doing so, when you pledge, you are committing to be the best road user than you can be – whether as a driver, passenger, pedestrian, cyclist, motorcyclist or horse rider, and adopt positive road user behaviours.
Collectively, the ability to reduce road casualties lies with each of us. We all have a personal responsibility; to ourselves, to other road users and to families across Northern Ireland. It is the actions of road users that cause the vast majority of collisions and resulting casualties.
Everyone in Northern Ireland, including all organisations such as the media, government, companies, schools and community groups can make their own personal or organisational pledge.
When you sign up to Share the Road to Zero you’ll receive weekly road safety tips and reminders starting with 5 ways to reduce road death.
If we all followed this simple advice, lives would be saved:
1. SLOW DOWN! Remember – THE FASTER THE SPEED THE BIGGER THE MESS!
2. NEVER EVER DRINK AND DRIVE!
3. Always pay attention and stay alert – ONE LAPSE CAN LAST A LIFETIME!
4. Always wear your seatbelt, front and rear – NO SEATBELT NO EXCUSE!
5. Follow the rules of The Highway Code for Northern Ireland every time you use the road. The Highway Code could keep you out of prison and save you from killing others or being killed whether you are a driver, a motorcyclist, a pedestrian or any other type of road user.
