SUBWAY® chain to sponsor 2010 Classic League
The SUBWAY® chain is showing its support for Irish cycling by becoming the title sponsor of this year’s Classic League. SUBWAY® is the largest quick service food chain in the Republic of Ireland with 109 stores and over 2,000 employees. The SUBWAY® chain is no stranger to the sport of cycling having sponsored a cycling team in New Zealand and it is already planning to extend its sponsorship to other cycling events and initiatives in Ireland.
“Cycling is a fantastic sport and the SUBWAY® chain want to play our part in helping Cycling Ireland to promote and develop the sport throughout Ireland,” said Paul Heyes, Development Agent for SUBWAY® in Ireland.
“Cycling Ireland is doing a tremendous job to attract youngsters into the sport and we believe that we can work well together to attract and encourage more people to take up cycling and to eat healthily,” he continued.
“The Classic League is just a starting point for us and we will be announcing an extension to our sponsorship programme in the coming weeks,” he added.
“Our range of Low Fat Subs is made for sports like cycling and they are ideal for riders looking for healthy snacks when they are out on the road or looking to grab something to eat while rushing from work to races. Each Sub contains less than 3g of fat per 100g and they taste great,” said Paul.
The Classic League gets underway in Letterkenny this Sunday with the John Deere Classic and there is a generous overall prize fund up for grabs. Prizes will be awarded right down to 15th place in the final overall standings.
This year’s League features a total of five events including the Des Hanlon Classic in Carlow on April 11th, the Shay Elliott Memorial in Bray on May 9th, the Kingdom Bar Road Race in Kllorglin on July 11th and the Tour of the Lakes in Buncrana on August 29th.
Competition for the SUBWAY® Irish Classic League Leader’s Jersey 2010 is expected to be intense during each race with Usher Irish Road Club’s Neil Delahaye looking to defend his title as last year’s League winner. He is expected to face tough competition from Sean Lacey from Eurocycles who is showing excellent form this season having already won three races.
“Cycling Ireland is delighted that the SUBWAY® chain has chosen to sponsor cycling and to support a number of initiatives throughout the year to develop the sport as a competitive and leisure activity,” said Geoff Liffey, Chief Executive Officer of Cycling Ireland.
“Cycling across Ireland is experiencing a huge resurgence and the success of Philip Deignan, Nicolas Roche and Dan Martin has helped our membership to grow. We expect to register 7,000 members by the end of the year and sponsors like the SUBWAY® chain are a welcome addition to the sport,” he added.
